New Delhi [India], August 15 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering his Independence Day speech to the nation on Thursday, batted for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) stating that India will now have to move towards a secular civil code to free the country from religion-based discrimination.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort, the Prime Minister said that the Supreme Court has held discussions regarding the UCC again and again and it has given orders several times.
PM Modi also called for a discussion over the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code across the country and asked people to give in their suggestions.
PM Modi said, “In our country, the Supreme Court has held discussions regarding the Uniform Civil Code again and again, and it has given orders several times. A large section of the country believes, and it is true, that the civil code that we are living with is actually a communal civil code in a way, a discriminatory civil code…”
The Prime Minister said, “I believe that there should be a discussion on this serious issue across the country…Everyone should come forward with their suggestions.”
PM Modi emphasised that the laws that divide the country on the basis of religion and lead to discrimination should have no place in society.
“The laws that divide the country on the basis of religion, the laws that become the reason for the discrimination–such laws should have no place in society,” PM Modi said.
“I would say that it is the need of the hour that there be a secular civil code in the country…We have spent 75 years in the Communal Civil code. Now we will have to move towards the secular code. Only then would we be free of discrimination on the basis of religion…,” PM Modi said.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was a proposal in India to establish uniform rules for personal matters for all citizens. These matters include marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights. The UCC would apply to all citizens equally, regardless of their religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
Meanwhile, during his address, the Prime Minister also spoke on attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. He said he understands the concerns regarding Hindus here and hopes the situation normalises at the earliest.
“As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope that the situation there gets normal at the earliest. The concerns of 140 crore countrymen to ensure the safety of Hindus and minorities there,” the PM said.
The Prime Minister added that India always wants its neighbouring countries to walk the path of prosperity and peace. “We are committed to peace…In the days to come, we will continue to wish well for Bangladesh in its ‘Vikas Yatra’ because we think about the welfare of humankind.”
The speech marked the 11th consecutive Independance speech by Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of the country. (ANI)
