Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 28 (ANI): As Assam observed ‘Deshbhakta Diwas’ today, state minister Pijush Hazarika explained the reason behind the celebration and said the Assam Government observes the death anniversary of Tarun Ram Phukan as ‘Deshbhakta Diwas’.
Speaking with media persons, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika said, “Some leaders from Assam played a big role in the independence of our nation. Tarun Ram Phukan and Gopinath Bordoloi were among those leaders…The people of Assam call Tarun Ram Phukan a ‘Deshbhakta’…Our government observes the death anniversary of Tarun Ram Phukan as ‘Deshbhakta Diwas’…”
Deshbhakti Diwas is celebrated in Assam on July 28 every year to commemorate the death anniversary of freedom fighter Tarun Ram Phukan. The day is observed in various districts of Assam, including Kamrup, South Salmara-Mankachar, and Dhubri. Celebrations may include programs with memorial lectures, essay competitions, and floral tributes.
Tarun Ram Phukan was a prominent leader of Assam. He was popularly known as Deshbhakta.
Meanwhile, in another proud moment for Assam, the mound burial system of the Ahom dynasty, also known as the Moidams, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the category of Cultural Property. The decision was taken during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC), held in the national capital, Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that it is a matter of immense joy and pride for India that Assam’s Moidams – the mound burial system of the Ahom dynasty-was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Taking to X, PM Modi said, “A matter of immense joy and pride for India! The Moidams at Charaideo showcase the glorious Ahom culture, which places utmost reverence to ancestors. I hope more people learn about the great Ahom rule and culture. Glad that the Moidams join the World Heritage List.” (ANI)
